Combat in single player and multiplayer is entirely different.
In single player its more like dungeons and dragons or a standard role playing game where you equip a weapon, and armour, learn combat fiets, level up gain hp and engage in a turn based combat with dice.
In multiplayer its more like a collectable card game where you fight mutants and then take on their powers to make yourself stronger, like building a deck through many different cards.
Both games are great, and highly worth playing although imho Single player could do with a few more combat options to make fights more interesting.
Generally single player is more about the npcs and their stories and how you manage to survive, while multiplayer is more about the combat and the crafting and roleplaying with others, though manifestly it also has some quests too.
I'd recommend both games.
