and the save data is broken.

The number of saves seems to be restricted to 6 slots (and crashing with the 7th), might depend on the size of the saves.
So to be on the safe side you should keep the number of saves low. After using "save", click on "edit" and delete some of your old saves first. Afterwards the save should work fine again.

I'd have to check out the javascript to see if the crashing could be improved. After running into that error I had to reload the page to make it work again and the game progress was lost for good.

I take it you're playing the game in your browser. Playing the game in the browser eventually results in this occurring, possibly due to the save files occupying too much of the browser's cache space. I believe clearing your browser cache, removing cookies, etc. will undo the issue for the moment, but it will reoccur. To avoid this issue, it is recommended you download the local install version of the game and play that way. It will also be much faster.
