Pedro's Quick and Dirty Chocobo Guide

My first suggestion is to read the +chocobo #help screen.  But, if you're
looking for a more direct route, then my guide is here to help you.
 
First off, decide what you want to do.  Do you just want to make a cool
chocobo mount?  Or are you interested in actually breeding and raising
chocobo for fun and profit?
 
If you just want to have a neat mount, it will save you lots of time and
jp/gil if you +hunt or buy the colour you want.  However, if you are
having bad luck in +hunt or the colour you want isn't available, then
continue reading.
 
The first step in +chocobo is making sure you have some stable room.  I
am not sure what the default is, but Pedro had 5 to start.  Other people
had less, so I am assuming you get more the higher in social status you
are.  Take that with a grain of salt.  You can increase your stable room
by using +resources.  2 resources will get you an extra stable slot.  You
can also give chocobos and eggs away, so if you have a willing partner or
two, you can do quite a bit of breeding.
 
Now you need to go to the market, and buy some units of chocobo.  These
chocobo will be yellow.  Type +chocobo/tame <name>, and a yellow chocobo
will arrive in your stables, with <name> for its name, and it's ready to
be mounted or mated.  If you get a gender that doesn't match the name
(if you care about such things) you can rename your chocobo with the
command: +chocobo/rename <oldname>=<newname>
 
Type +chococo <name or number>  This command will let you see your
chocobo's stats.  I will show you Spike's current stats so I can explain.

Its level, gender and colour should all be self explanitory.  CP stands
for, I believe, chocobo points.  Which is basically JP for chocobo.  Yours
will start with 10, as you can see I have put JP and gil into Spike here.
 
Top speed is the chocobo's speed, the base speed is about 21MPH.  This
speed can be increased by increasing the Speed stat.
 
Endurance is is how long the chocobo can be mounted, I think.  To be
honest, I'm not 100% sure.  I think it can be raised by raising it's
Tolerance stat.  Tolarance also affects hp, I think.  Don't quote me on
that
 
Actions are the number of combat actions the chocobo is allowed PER SCENE.
Remember that part, per scene.  You can increase it's actions by increasing
it's Wisdom stat.  Chocobo start with 1 action.
 
Capacity is the amount of stuff a chocobo can hold, potions, gear, weapons,
etc.  You can increase Capacity by increasing the Capacity stat.
 
The Fertility stat increases the chance of getting an egg from a mating.
It would be ideal to increase the Fertility stat on both birds involved.
 
I have to say, I have no idea what the different colour modifiers do.  And
because the coder for +chocobo is gone, I'll leave it as an exercise for
the different chocobo herders to figure it out.  I'm fairly sure most of
the modifiers are self explanitory, they are likely combat abilities that
the chocobo can do.  They also help detirmine the colour of the eggs laid.
 
Breeding for fun and profit... well, profit mostly.
 
As mentioned, the different chocobo modifiers help detirmine the colour of
egg laid when you breed two chocobo together.  I know from experience that
you can breed two same coloured chocobo together and you'll end up with
that colour of egg.  To get new colours, well, therein lies the rub.
 
Yellow chocobos can add modifiers in yellow, blue, green and red.  While
it cannot USE the modifiers in blue, green and red, adding a few points to
one of them will add a random chance of getting that colour of egg.  For
instance, if you type +chocobo/raise 1=fire=5cp, you will cause your
chocobo in position one of your stable to add 5 points to it's Fire stat.
When you mate this chocobo with another, there will be a 5 point chance of
getting a red egg.
 
Red, green and blue chocobos can use their own colours, plus yellow.  They
can also add points to black modifiers.  Thusly, to gain a chance of a
black egg, you need to mate a chocobo that has a black modifier.
 
Black chocobo can use any modifier except for gold, and can add points to
a gold modifier, and can breed gold chocobo that way.
 
Gold chocobo can use any modifier.
 
Breeding serves two purposes however.  Getting different coloured chocobo
AND raising the chocobo's max stats beyond 25.  Basically, when you mate
two chocobo together, it adds up their current stats together.  If that
total is above 25, then the egg laid will have that new number as a max
stat.

For example, consider Quanta here, and Spike way above.  If you add their
fertility together, you'd get a number of 33.  Mating these two will cause
any eggs to have a base maximum fertility of 33.  If you were to add a few
points to Quanta's speed, you'd get a maximum speed above 25, since
Spike's is at 25.
 
Now, if you are going to breed full time, you have to make a decision.
You can set yourself up to be able to breed reliably any colour you want
at any time, or you can be efficient with your stable space, but that
makes getting the colour you want hit or miss.  What I am doing is using
six breeding pairs.  This means getting gold chocobo first, and it will
take some time (about two full months).  Each breeding pair will be
maxxed out in both regular chocobo stats, and the colour modifier you
wish to breed.  The eggs you end up with will have 50 caps in their
modifier and regular stats, but 25 caps in everything else.
 
If you want to be more efficient with your stable space, then all you
need is one breeding pair.  Max out their stats, and their children
will have 50 caps in everything... but every time you breed them,
their different modifiers will war with each other.  There can be only
one! :3
